Base Environmental Group completes first of its kind Acid Mine Drainage Passive Treatment System. Base was awarded the Open Limestone Channel installation project in August, 2006, which was co-funded by the West Virginia Water Research Institute, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and the Office of Surface Mining all in coordination with the Lower Paint Creek Watershed Association.
The project involved an Open Limestone Channel along a nearly 10,000 linear foot stretch of Long Branch, a tributary of Paint Creek. Over 5,200 tons of 10-inch limestone were carefully placed in the stream bed. Through utilization of logistically selected equipment, Base was able to limit the number of access points to the stream, thereby significantly reducing the amount of clearing and grubbing required.
The pH of the stream was raised almost immediately from 3.5 to 7.0, with a noticeable precipitation of aluminum prior to the stream’s confluence with Paint Creek. Design engineers project the treatment system to last 20 years.
